A low-pressure system dubbed Eva is expected to sweep into Greece from Italy late on Friday, bringing severe weather across the country, the national weather service (EMY) said on Thursday.
In an emergency bulletin warning of powerful downpours and lighting, EMY said that the severe weather was expected to hit the islands of the Ionian early on Saturday before making landfall on the western mainland and Peloponnese later in the day.
The stormy weather will continue stretching east to hit central Greece and the eastern mainland, including Athens, overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, when it will march across the Aegean, reaching the islands of the Sporades, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete.
In a warning to local authorities and residents, EMY said that the islands of the Ionian, western and central Macedonia, eastern Thessaly and the Sporades will bear the brunt of the storm.
