Three new metro stations in Piraeus will open on Monday

The three new metro stations of Piraeus will be inaugurated next Monday, October 10, after many years of construction and anticipation. These stations are Maniatika, Piraeus and Municipal Theatre.

The total travel time by metro from the port to the airport is estimated to only be 55 minutes. It is expected to reduce car traffic by 23,000 vehicles per day, as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 120 tons per day.

As Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced at the New Democracy summit, “on Monday we are inaugurating the three new metro stations in Piraeus,” adding that “we continue to proceed with stability, continuity and consistency”.

The Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Giorgos Karagiannis emphasised several times the importance of this project, noting that with the operation of the metro in Piraeus, the country’s largest airport will be connected to the largest port in less than an hour.

Regarding Line 4 of the metro, it is expected that an additional 340,000 passengers will travel daily on this line alone, while 2,000 new trees will be planted in Athens.

For the first time, architectural competitions will be held in collaboration with the Municipality of Athens to landscape many of the squares and open spaces.

Regarding the timetable, Karagiannis pointed out at the end of last month that “the completion horizon of Line 4 is seven years, at the end, that is, 2029”, adding that “for its construction we are largely using underground excavation to limit the disturbance, which is happening for the first time”.

Regarding the Thessaloniki metro, Karagiannis underlined that “the project is now in the final stretch. The metro will be finished at the end of 2023.”

“I was in Thessaloniki when the metro started and after so many years it has not been completed. The disbelief and skepticism of the residents is reasonable. We cannot make infrastructure projects a field of political confrontation,” he added.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure noted that, now, “spaces are being freed up in Thessaloniki. The metro will be one of the most modern in Europe and at the end of 2023 the city will have both a metro and an ancient one.”
