Self-taught artist Angelos Spachis (1903-60) is hailed as the father of graphic design in Greece and has given us some of the country’s most iconic brand identities, packages and advertisements. The National Library of Greece (Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, 364 Syngrou, Kallithea) pays tribute to this influential pioneer with an exhibition that seeks to acquaint the public with the excellent work of the often-overlooked artist. Admission is free of charge and opening times are from 9.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
He worked in the advertising division of the Astir company, starting in 1918. He was involved with interior decoration and the graphic arts, working in cooperation with advertising firms. For many years he designed cigarette packets for the Papastratos and Keranis cigarette companies. In 1935 he took part in the exhibition of the Art Group at the Atelier gallery. Self-taught, he was one of the first Greek artists to adopt the collage technique and use scraping in his work.
