Images that give an insight into Ancient Greece came to light because of the excavations carried out for the Thessaloniki Metro. The amazing photos were released by Attiko Metro SA.
The route of the Metro lines, which crosses the city centre, follows the axis of the main street of the ancient city which was flanked by colonnades and arcades and had a 16 metre wide road surface.
It started from the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea) in today’s Vardaris Square and ended at Sintrivani Square.Important antiquities, and in fact representative of many periods of the city’s life, are being excavated for the first time after centuries in order to complete the construction of the two other Metro stations located within the limits of the historic city centre.
